In the beginning, August Strauss and his two sons, including Engelbert (*1908) traded brooms and brushes. The first products were gloves, which still play a central role in the company's portfolio. In the 1960s, the company shifted to mail order business and in 1973 started its catalog operations. Gradually, the assortment expanded to clothing and footwear.

The family company is today run jointly by the third and fourth generation. Engelbert's son Norbert Strauss, and his two sons Steffen and Henning Strauss, who are the executive directors. The company employs approximately 1,500 employees.

Strauss also manufactures in China

The company produces in 28 countries worldwide: in Europe (14%), Asia (85%), and Africa (1%). Some manufacturing plants in Asia produce exclusively for the company. According to their own statements, years of cooperation have led to high utilization of individual production facilities. The largest manufacturing partners are Laos (12%), Vietnam (15%), and Bangladesh (36%).
